Korvavammat refers to injuries sustained by the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. These injuries can result from a variety of causes, including direct trauma, foreign bodies, chemical exposure, and certain medical conditions. Symptoms often include pain, redness, a gritty sensation, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and tearing.

Common types of corneal injuries include abrasions, which are scratches on the surface of the cornea; lacerations, which are deeper cuts; and perforations, where the cornea is completely penetrated. Chemical burns from substances like acids or alkalis can cause severe and rapid damage to the corneal tissue. Exposure to ultraviolet light, such as from welding or tanning beds without proper protection, can lead to photokeratitis, a painful inflammation of the cornea.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough eye examination, often using a slit lamp microscope to visualize the corneal surface. Staining the cornea with fluorescein dye can help identify abrasions or other irregularities. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. Minor abrasions may heal on their own with antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection and pain relief. More serious injuries may require patching, specialized contact lenses, or even surgical intervention to repair or replace damaged corneal tissue. Prompt medical attention is crucial for all corneal injuries to minimize the risk of infection, scarring, and permanent vision loss.
