Korrelgalsening

Korrelgalsening is a term that refers to a specific type of gall formation found on certain plants, primarily within the *Quercus* genus (oaks). These galls are characteristically small, spherical, and often clustered together, resembling tiny grains or seeds, hence the name "korrelgalsening" which translates from Dutch to "grain galling" or "seed galling." The development of these galls is induced by the larval stage of small wasps, typically from the family Cynipidae.

The life cycle of these gall wasps is complex, often involving alternating generations that may differ in appearance and host plant. The female gall wasp lays her eggs within the plant tissues, usually on leaves or twigs. In response to the developing larva and its secretions, the plant tissue grows abnormally, forming the gall. The gall serves as a protective shelter and food source for the larva. Once mature, the wasp emerges from the gall, leaving behind an empty casing.

Korrelgalsening are generally considered a nuisance rather than a serious threat to the health of mature trees. While they can affect the aesthetic appearance of foliage, they rarely cause significant damage. Control measures are typically not necessary for established trees, as natural predators and parasites often help regulate gall wasp populations. In severe cases on young or ornamental trees, manual removal of heavily infested branches might be considered, but this is uncommon.
