Korreksjon

Korreksjon is the act of correcting or adjusting something to align it with a standard, improve accuracy, or fix errors. The concept spans many domains, including language, publishing, data processing, engineering, science, and medicine.

Etymology: The word derives from Latin correctio, through Old French and into English, Norwegian, and other Scandinavian languages. In Norwegian, common spellings are korreksjon and korrigering, with capitalization following general grammar rules.

In publishing and linguistics, correction refers to changes made to fix spelling, grammar, punctuation, or factual errors after proofreading. In data handling, corrections adjust for known biases or measurement errors, often via calibration or modelling.

In science and engineering, correction factors are applied to raw measurements to improve accuracy; examples include instrument calibration, environmental corrections, or error-correcting codes in information theory. In statistics, corrections may adjust p-values or account for measurement bias.

In medicine and dentistry, correction denotes procedures that restore function or appearance by realigning structures, such as orthodontic corrections to teeth alignment or corrective surgery for deformities.

Korreksjon thus denotes a broad family of practices aimed at bringing systems, data, or bodies into a more accurate or desired state, whether through textual edits, numerical adjustments, or physical realignment.
