Korallilohkot

Korallilohkot, scientific name Corallium, are a genus of marine invertebrates belonging to the class Anthozoa, which also includes sea anemones and true corals. Unlike stony corals that build calcium carbonate skeletons, Corallium species produce a hard, calcified skeleton composed primarily of calcium carbonate. This skeleton is typically red or pink in color and is highly prized for its ornamental qualities.

These organisms are colonial, meaning a single individual is composed of numerous polyps that are genetically identical and interconnected. The polyps are small, sessile, and are responsible for feeding and reproduction. They extend their feathery tentacles from the surface of the skeleton to capture plankton from the water column. Corallium species are found in deep waters, often at depths ranging from 100 to 1000 meters, in temperate and tropical oceans worldwide. They prefer areas with moderate currents that bring a steady supply of food.

The prized red coral, Corallium rubrum, is the most well-known species. It has been harvested for centuries for use in jewelry, amulets, and other decorative objects. This harvesting, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, has led to concerns about overexploitation and the sustainability of populations. Conservation efforts are in place in some regions to manage harvesting and protect these valuable marine resources. The slow growth rate of Corallium species makes them particularly vulnerable to overfishing.
