Koproduktion

Koproduktion, or co-production, is the joint creation of a work or product by producers from two or more countries or companies. In audiovisual contexts, it refers to a collaborative film or television project financed and produced by partners from different jurisdictions, combining capital, talent, and creative contribution to qualify for subsidies and distribution in multiple markets. The term is used in German, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish contexts (koproduktion / coproduktion).

In film and television, coproductions rely on formal agreements that specify each partner’s financial stake, creative input, rights, and how costs and revenues are shared. They are commonly pursued to access public subsidies, tax incentives, and wider distribution, as well as to ensure cultural representation from participating countries. Successful coproduction typically requires a defined balance of participation and creative control among partners, and careful coordination of production schedules, staffing, and legal obligations.

Legal and policy frameworks in Europe have long supported cross-border productions. Funding bodies such as European and national film funds, along with transnational programs, facilitate eligibility for support. Rules often include minimum levels of national participation and control by each country, the right to a share of revenues, and the attribution of cultural credits. The aim is to enable high-quality works with international reach while distributing economic benefits and preserving cultural diversity.

Beyond audiovisual media, koproduktion can also describe joint production of goods or technology by firms in different jurisdictions, enabling risk sharing, access to new markets, and transfer of know-how.
