Koordinataatorkatalüüsi, also known as coordination catalysis, is a type of homogeneous catalysis where a metal complex acts as the catalyst. The key feature of this process is the involvement of a central metal atom that is bonded to a ligand. This ligand, often an organic molecule, plays a crucial role in modulating the electronic and steric properties of the metal center, thereby influencing its reactivity and selectivity.

In a typical coordination catalysis cycle, the substrate molecules coordinate to the metal center of the catalyst. This coordination weakens the bonds within the substrate and activates it for further reaction. The metal then facilitates the chemical transformation, such as bond formation or cleavage, often through a series of elementary steps like oxidative addition, migratory insertion, and reductive elimination. Finally, the product molecules dissociate from the metal, regenerating the active catalyst for the next catalytic cycle.

This catalytic method is highly versatile and has found widespread applications in organic synthesis. Examples include polymerization reactions (e.g., Ziegler-Natta catalysis), hydrogenation, oxidation, carbonylation, and C-C bond formation reactions (e.g., Suzuki coupling, Heck reaction).
