Koobastes

Koobastes is a fictional genus of bioluminescent fungi used in speculative biology and science fiction to illustrate fungal diversity and ecosystem function. The genus is described as containing several species that form conspicuous fruiting bodies on decaying wood and rich litter in temperate forests.

Taxonomically, Koobastes is placed in the domain Eukaryota, kingdom Fungi, division Basidiomycota, class Agaricomycetes, order Agaricales, with the fictional family Koobastaceae. Species exhibit a range of cap shapes from convex to funnel-shaped, typically 2–8 cm across, with surfaces ranging from olive to chestnut and a fibrous pellicle. Gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, and the stipe is slender. Many depicted species show faint bioluminescence from tissues in the cap margin or within the mycelial cords.
