Konzeptstudie

Konzeptstudie is a preliminary analysis and documentation of a proposed project or product concept. It is used to explore feasibility, clarify objectives, and outline approaches before detailed planning or design begins. In German-speaking contexts it is commonly employed in engineering, architecture, IT, and public administration to provide a structured basis for decision making, including go/no-go approvals and budget planning.

A Konzeptstudie typically covers the problem statement, the defined target state, and the core requirements (functional and non-functional). It presents several options or design variants, along with evaluation criteria and a recommended concept. The document may include a high-level solution concept or architecture, rough cost and time estimates, and a risk assessment. Stakeholder needs, legal and regulatory considerations, and environmental or social impacts are often addressed.

The process usually involves initial problem analysis, stakeholder workshops, and benchmarking, followed by development of concept variants. Each option is evaluated against criteria such as feasibility, economic viability, and strategic fit, leading to a preferred concept and an outline of the next steps for implementation. The goal is to reduce uncertainty, align stakeholders, and provide a clear basis for further planning.

Konzeptstudien are distinct from detailed designs or feasibility studies but may overlap with them. They are frequently used in public procurement, project planning, and product development to inform decisions and set the project’s subsequent scope and approach. Deliverables typically include a concept report, an executive summary, and an implementation outline.
