At their core, control networks involve a feedback loop. This loop typically consists of sensors that measure the current state of the system, controllers that process this information and make decisions, and actuators that implement these decisions to adjust the system. For example, in a heating system, a thermostat (sensor) measures the room temperature, a control unit (controller) compares it to the desired setting and decides whether to turn the furnace on or off, and the furnace itself (actuator) is activated or deactivated accordingly.

Communication protocols are crucial for enabling the various components of a control network to exchange data effectively and reliably. These protocols can range from wired solutions like Modbus or CAN bus to wireless technologies, depending on the specific requirements of the application and its environment. The design and implementation of effective control networks require a deep understanding of system dynamics, control theory, and reliable communication methods to ensure stability, performance, and safety.
