Kontrastratio is a term that refers to the ratio between the brightest and darkest parts of an image or display. It is a crucial metric for evaluating the quality of visual reproduction, particularly in displays like televisions, monitors, and projectors. A higher contrast ratio generally indicates a greater difference between the darkest blacks and the brightest whites, leading to a more detailed and visually impactful image. This is because a wider range of tonal values can be represented, allowing for finer distinctions between light and shadow.

The contrast ratio is typically expressed as a numerical value, such as 1000:1 or 100,000:1. This means that the brightest white is 1000 or 100,000 times brighter than the darkest black, respectively. Different display technologies achieve varying contrast ratios. For instance, OLED displays are known for their exceptional contrast ratios because each pixel can be individually turned off, resulting in true black.
