Kontoåbning, or opening of a bank account, is the process by which an individual or a business establishes a new account with a bank. In Denmark and similar Nordic contexts, the process enables the holder to deposit funds, make payments, receive wages, and access other financial services. Banks may offer various account types including personal current accounts, savings accounts, and business accounts, with different features and eligibility rules.

To open an account, customers typically choose a bank and compare terms such as fees, interest, online banking features, and card services. The applicant must submit an application accompanied by identity and address verification. For individuals this usually includes a valid photo ID and a CPR number or equivalent, proof of residence, and sometimes proof of employment or income. For businesses, documentation may include registration papers, VAT number, and information about signatories. In some cases, non-residents face additional requirements and may need a local address or a reference.

Common account types include a standard current account with a debit card, a savings account, and joint or business accounts. Banks may offer online or in-branch opening, and may require an initial deposit. Some accounts include overdraft facilities or linked payment services. Digital identification tools (such as MitID) are often used to verify identity during online applications.
