Kontinuitetstests, or continuity tests, are procedures used to determine whether two points in an electrical circuit are connected by a conducting path. They aim to confirm that current can flow between the points, indicating an unbroken connection through wires, connectors, switches, or PCB traces.

Applications include electrical installation, maintenance, electronics manufacturing, and repair. Continuity testing helps verify wiring runs, terminal connections, fuses, relays, and other components. It is a common troubleshooting step to identify open circuits or broken connections.

Tools and methods commonly used are dedicated continuity testers, buzzer testers, and digital multimeters set to continuity or low-resistance mode. A test signal is applied between two points, and a closed path typically produces an audible beep or a visual indication. In resistance mode, a very low reading also suggests continuity, while high or infinite resistance indicates an open circuit. Some tests can be performed through insulated cables or through components that are expected to be in the path.

Procedure and safety considerations: Testing is generally done with power removed and circuits de-energized. Disconnect power sources, discharge capacitors where applicable, and follow relevant safety guidelines. Interpret results in the context of the circuit: a low resistance value usually signifies good continuity for short runs, but the acceptable value can vary. Note that a continuity test does not assess insulation, device functionality, or overall safety, and readings can be influenced by components such as fuses, transformers, or complex assemblies.

Standards and practice: Operators should follow the instrument manufacturer's instructions and applicable electrical safety standards for the environment and equipment being tested.
