Later, true automatic machine guns emerged, utilizing the energy of the fired cartridge to cycle the action and load the next round. Notable examples include Hiram Maxim's gun, which used recoil to operate, and later designs that employed gas pressure.

Machine guns are characterized by their rapid rate of fire, often measured in hundreds of rounds per minute. This makes them highly effective suppressive weapons, capable of creating an area denial effect or providing covering fire for advancing troops.
