Konekäännöksellä refers to the process of using computer software to translate text or speech from one language to another. This technology, often referred to as machine translation (MT), has been a significant area of research and development in computational linguistics for decades. Early machine translation systems relied on rule-based approaches, employing linguistic rules and dictionaries to perform translations. More recently, statistical machine translation (SMT) emerged, which learns translation patterns from large parallel corpora (texts translated between two languages).

The current state-of-the-art in machine translation is largely dominated by neural machine translation (NMT). NMT systems utilize deep learning models, particularly neural networks, to process and generate translations. These models can capture complex linguistic nuances and contextual information more effectively than previous methods, leading to more fluent and accurate translations. Despite significant advancements, machine translation still faces challenges. These include handling idiomatic expressions, cultural references, ambiguous language, and domain-specific terminology. The quality of translation can vary greatly depending on the language pair, the complexity of the text, and the availability of high-quality training data. Users often employ machine translation as a tool to gain a general understanding of a text or to assist human translators rather than as a complete replacement for human expertise.
