Kondolenzhinweise

Kondolenzhinweise are guidelines for the respectful expression of sympathy following the death of a person. The term literally means “consolation instructions” and establishes a framework for how condolences should be formulated in personal, religious, or workplace contexts.

In most German‑speaking cultures, a condolence note is expected to convey empathy, honor the deceased’s memory, and offer support to the bereaved family. The message is usually brief, sincere, and avoids overly dramatic or religious statements unless they reflect the family’s beliefs.

A typical condolence note follows a simple structure: a salutation, a brief expression of loss, a personal anecdote or memory, and a closing wish. Sentences such as “Wir trauern mit Ihnen über den Verlust Ihres Vaters” or “Ihr Cousin Paul wird uns fehlen” are common. The tone should be warm, but not intimate beyond what the relationship warrants. Standard closings include “Mit stillem Gruß” or “In tiefer Anteilnahme”.

Do’s and don’ts: avoid clichés, do not attribute the cause of death, and do not speculate. If you were close to the deceased, an anecdote may be appropriate; otherwise, a simple expression of solidarity suffices. In corporate settings, a formal card or e‑mail that follows the company’s etiquette guidelines is recommended, and the language should reflect the organization’s culture.

Internationally, condolence practices vary. In some Eastern European or Latin American contexts, religious prayers are commonly added. In Scandinavia, minimalistic wording is favored. The Kondo‑Zion guidelines encourage adapting to the cultural expectations of the bereaved.
