Kondensaattorityyppi refers to the classification of capacitors based on the dielectric material they use. The dielectric is the insulating material between the conductive plates of a capacitor, and its properties significantly influence the capacitor's performance, including its capacitance, voltage rating, stability, and frequency response.

Common capacitor types include ceramic capacitors, which utilize ceramic materials as the dielectric. These are known for their small size, high capacitance density, and good high-frequency performance, but their capacitance can vary with temperature and voltage. Electrolytic capacitors, such as aluminum electrolytic and tantalum electrolytic capacitors, employ a thin oxide layer formed on a metal anode as the dielectric. They offer high capacitance values for their size and cost but are polarized, meaning they must be connected with the correct polarity, and have a limited lifespan and poorer high-frequency characteristics compared to some other types. Film capacitors use plastic films like polyester or polypropylene as the dielectric. They are non-polarized, offer good stability, and have excellent long-term reliability, making them suitable for audio circuits and power electronics.

Other capacitor types include mica capacitors, which use mica as the dielectric, offering excellent stability and high-frequency performance but are generally more expensive. Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors or electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), store energy electrostatically rather than dielectrically and can store significantly more energy than conventional capacitors, often used for energy storage and power backup. The choice of capacitor type depends on the specific application requirements.
