Komutointi

Komutointi is a Finnish term that translates to commutation in English. It refers to the process of switching electrical current from one part of a circuit to another. This is a fundamental concept in electrical engineering, particularly in direct current (DC) circuits and the operation of electric motors and generators.

In a DC motor, komutointi is the mechanism that reverses the direction of current in the armature coils at the correct time. This reversal ensures that the motor continues to rotate. Without proper komutointi, the motor would simply oscillate or stop. Similarly, in a DC generator, komutointi rectifies the alternating current produced by the rotating coils into direct current.

The device responsible for komutointi in many DC machines is called a commutator. A commutator is a rotating switch that consists of segmented copper bars connected to the armature windings. Stationary brushes, typically made of carbon, make contact with these bars. As the armature rotates, the commutator and brushes work together to direct the current flow at precise moments, achieving the desired switching action.

Modern electrical systems often employ electronic commutation, which uses semiconductor devices like transistors or thyristors instead of mechanical commutators. Electronic komutointi offers advantages such as increased efficiency, reduced wear and tear, and greater control over motor speed and performance. This is common in brushless DC motors and inverters. The principle behind both mechanical and electronic komutointi remains the same: to manage the flow of electrical current to achieve specific operational outcomes.
