Kompromissprojektion

Kompromissprojektion refers to a psychological phenomenon where individuals project their own unacceptable desires or impulses onto others. This defense mechanism allows the person to avoid confronting their own internal conflicts by attributing them to someone else. For example, someone who harbors aggressive feelings might accuse others of being hostile towards them. This projection helps them maintain a sense of self-innocence by externalizing the perceived negative trait.

The concept is closely related to Freudian psychoanalytic theory, particularly the defense mechanisms outlined by Sigmund Freud and later expanded upon by Anna Freud. It is understood as an unconscious process, meaning the individual is not deliberately trying to deceive themselves or others. Instead, it serves as a way to reduce anxiety and maintain a stable self-image by disavowing parts of themselves they deem undesirable.

Recognizing kompromissprojektion can be challenging as it operates at an unconscious level. However, observing consistent patterns of blaming others for perceived negative behaviors or feelings can be an indicator. Therapy often involves helping individuals become more aware of their own internal states and understand the underlying reasons for their projections.
