Kompressiven

Kompressiven is a German adjective derived from komprimieren, meaning relating to or causing compression. In technical and scientific contexts it describes forces, stresses, or states that tend to shorten, compact, or reduce the volume of a material or system. The term is used in disciplines such as engineering, physics, materials science, biomechanics, and geology to distinguish compressive effects from tensile or shear effects.

In German, kompressiv has different inflected forms. The form kompressiven appears in plural with a definite determiner, for example: die kompressiven Kräfte. In the plural without a determiner, the form is kompressive Kräfte. The word can also appear in other cases and numbers with corresponding endings, following standard German adjective declension.

Common applications include refer­ring to compressive forces (kompressionskräfte) acting on structures, compressive stresses (kompressive Spannungen) within materials, and compressive loading (kompressive Belastung) in design and analysis. In biomechanics, cartilage and joints experience kompressive loading; in geology, crustal deformation under kompressive regimes is described as well. The term is often contrasted with terms describing tension (zugfest, Zugkräfte) or shear (Schubspannungen).
