Kompatibilitetsmatriser

Kompatibilitetsmatriser (compatibility matrices) are data representations used to document and assess the compatibility between two or more sets of items, such as hardware components, software versions, or chemical materials. The matrix is typically arranged with one set along the rows and the other along the columns; each entry records whether the corresponding pair is compatible, and may include a degree of compatibility or other qualifiers. Entries are commonly binary (0/1) or ternary (e.g., incompatible, partially compatible, fully compatible) or use a numeric scale.

Construction involves collecting specifications, test results, or expert judgments for each pair, then encoding the results in the matrix. The matrix supports quick assessment of fit, gap analysis, and decision making, as well as traceability from requirements to components. It can be used to identify combinations that are not compatible, to plan substitutions, or to select only those pairs that meet a minimum compatibility level.

Typical domains include hardware-software interface compatibility (motherboards and CPUs, drivers), software dependency and platform support (application versions on operating systems and runtimes), product design (parts compatibility in assembly), and chemical/material compatibility assessments (corrosion, reactions).

Limitations include the static nature of a matrix, which must be updated as new components appear; it may not capture performance, timing constraints, or environmental conditions; and complexity grows with the size of the sets. Proper labeling, versioning, and provenance are important for maintainability.
