Kolonointi

Kolonointi refers to the process of establishing and maintaining a colony, typically involving the settlement of people in a new territory under the political control of their native country. Historically, colonization has been driven by various motivations, including economic exploitation, the spread of religion, political expansion, and the search for new resources or trade routes. European powers, such as Spain, Portugal, Britain, France, and the Netherlands, were among the most active colonizers during the Age of Exploration (15th–17th centuries) and beyond.

The practice of colonization often involved the displacement or subjugation of indigenous populations, leading to significant cultural, social, and demographic changes in the colonized regions. Colonizers introduced new technologies, governance systems, and sometimes forced assimilation of local customs. In many cases, this resulted in conflicts, resistance, and long-lasting consequences for both colonizers and colonized peoples.

Kolonointi could take various forms, including direct rule, where the colonizing power administered the territory through its own officials, or indirect rule, where local leaders were retained but under colonial oversight.
