Kokonaispysähtymismatka, often translated as total stopping distance, is a fundamental concept in road safety that refers to the total distance a vehicle travels from the moment a driver perceives a hazard until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. It is comprised of two primary components: reaction distance and braking distance.

Reaction distance is the distance the vehicle travels during the time it takes for the driver to perceive a hazard, decide to brake, and physically move their foot to the brake pedal. This reaction time is influenced by factors such as driver alertness, fatigue, distraction, and impairment.

Braking distance, on the other hand, is the distance the vehicle travels from the moment the brakes are applied until the vehicle stops. This distance is affected by several variables, including the vehicle's speed, the condition of the brakes, the type and condition of the tires, and the road surface. Factors such as wet or icy roads, worn tires, or poorly maintained brakes will significantly increase the braking distance.

The kokonaispysähtymismatka is therefore a crucial consideration for safe driving. Drivers must maintain sufficient following distances to ensure they have adequate space to stop safely if the vehicle in front of them stops suddenly. Understanding that higher speeds drastically increase the total stopping distance is essential for avoiding accidents. For example, doubling the speed does not simply double the stopping distance; it quadruples it.
