KoillisSuomi

KoillisSuomi, meaning Northeast Finland, is a geographical region in Finland. It is generally understood to encompass the northern parts of the former Oulu Province and the western parts of the former Lapland Province. This area is characterized by its vast wilderness, sparse population, and cold climate. Major municipalities often associated with KoillisSuomi include Kuusamo, Suomussalmi, Puolanka, Taivalkoski, and Posio.

The landscape of KoillisSuomi is dominated by extensive forests, numerous lakes, and rolling hills. The region is a significant destination for nature tourism, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, skiing, and wildlife observation. Oulanka National Park, situated in Kuusamo and bordering Russia, is a prime example of the natural beauty and biodiversity found here. The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park also partially lies within the broader northern Finnish wilderness, though its core is further north.

Economically, KoillisSuomi has historically relied on forestry and agriculture.
