Knappsack

Knappsack is not a widely recognized term as a standalone subject. In many references it appears as a misspelling or variant of knapsack, which can refer either to a type of bag or to a fundamental concept in computer science and operations research known as the knapsack problem.

The knapsack problem is a classic optimization problem. Formally, given a set of items each with a weight w_i and a value v_i, the goal is to select a subset of items to maximize total value without exceeding a given weight capacity W. Variants include the 0/1 knapsack, where each item can be chosen at most once; the fractional knapsack, where items can be divided and portions taken; and multidimensional or multiple-knapsack problems, which introduce several constraints. The problem is NP-hard, meaning that no efficient solution is known for all cases. Exact solutions can be obtained with dynamic programming in pseudo-polynomial time for the 0/1 version, while practical approaches include branch-and-bound, as well as various approximation algorithms and a fast approximation scheme (FPTAS).

Applications of the knapsack model span resource allocation and decision making in fields such as logistics, budgeting, project selection, and portfolio optimization, where limited capacity or resources must be allocated to maximize value or performance.
