Klöppelkissen

Klöppelkissen, often translated as lace pillow, is a traditional tool used in bobbin lacemaking. It serves as a stable base upon which the bobbins are wound and moved to create intricate lace patterns. The pillow is typically cylindrical or bolster-shaped, allowing lacemakers to work around it as the lace progresses. Historically, these pillows were often stuffed with straw, sawdust, or horsehair, providing a firm yet slightly yielding surface. Modern klöppelkissen are commonly filled with synthetic materials like polyester fiberfill or foam, offering consistent density and ease of maintenance.

The surface of a klöppelkissen is usually covered with a durable fabric, such as linen or cotton, to prevent the threads from snagging. A crucial element is the pins, which are temporarily inserted into the pillow to hold the working threads in place as the pattern is formed. These pins are strategically placed according to a paper pattern, often called a pricking, which guides the lacemaker. The shape and size of the klöppelkissen can vary depending on the type of lace being made and the preference of the lacemaker. Some lacemakers also use additional tools like bobbin winders and tensioning devices in conjunction with their klöppelkissen to facilitate the lacemaking process.
