Kloridhalt

Kloridhalt, or chloride content, describes the quantity of chloride ions present in a substance. In liquids it is usually expressed as milligrams of chloride per liter (mg/L) or as the concentration of Cl−, while in solids it is often given as a percentage by mass or as mg/kg. The term is widely used in water quality, soil science, construction materials, and food analysis.

Measurement methods include ion chromatography (IC) for precise Cl− concentrations, argentometric titration methods such as the Mohr or Volhard procedures for rapid screening, and sometimes inductively coupled plasma techniques for related measurements. In water analysis, chloride is a routine parameter because high levels can affect taste and contribute to corrosion risk in metallic systems.

Typical values vary by context. Seawater contains around 19,000 mg/L of chloride, while freshwater generally exhibits much lower levels. Drinking water standards in many jurisdictions cap chloride at roughly 250 mg/L as a secondary guideline due to taste and corrosion considerations. In soils and environmental samples, chloride contents reflect salinity, geology, and human inputs such as de-icing salts or wastewater.

In construction, chlorides are a key concern for reinforced concrete, as they can promote corrosion of steel reinforcement. Standards often specify maximum acceptable chloride contents in concrete or in mixes; the threshold for corrosion initiation is commonly stated as a fraction of a percent by mass of cement, with values roughly in the 0.4–0.6% range depending on conditions.

Regulatory and advisory bodies use kloridhalt data to assess environmental impact, material performance, and product quality. Interpretation depends on sample type, units, and applicable standards.
