Klippefigurer

Klippefigurer, or cliff figures, is a term used in some Scandinavian languages to describe figures carved into or displayed on cliff faces and rock surfaces. The concept covers a range of practices, including petroglyphs carved into rock, rock reliefs where figures are sculpted to stand out from the surrounding stone, and sometimes painted or stained compositions that appear on rock surfaces. In broad use, klippefigurer denotes anthropomorphic or symbolic forms that are integrated with the natural cliff environment rather than created as standalone statues.
