There are several methods used to perpetrate click fraud. One common approach is manual click fraud, where individuals, often hired for the purpose, systematically click on ads. More sophisticated and prevalent is automated click fraud, which utilizes bots or malware to generate fake clicks. These bots can be programmed to mimic human browsing behavior, making them harder to detect. Another form is "click farms," organizations that employ low-wage workers to manually click on ads for extended periods.

Click fraud can be carried out by various parties. Competitors may engage in it to exhaust an rival's advertising budget, forcing them out of the market.
