The term encompasses the people, language, and cultural practices associated with these communities, as well as the trade networks that connect them.

The name Klain is traditionally traced to an ancient river name in the setting’s proto-language. The Klain language is described as agglutinative, with a focus on serial verb constructions and a rich system of honorifics tied to guild status and maritime authority. Clains speak dialects that vary by city but share core vocabulary related to navigation, carpentry, and water management.

Geographically, the Klain Basin is a delta of rivers, canals, and tidal flats. Settlements are built on stilts or raised causeways and are connected by boat traffic and rope bridges. The urban core tends to center on markets and shipyards, while inland districts focus on agriculture and timber processing.
