Ethnocultural is an adjective used to describe phenomena that involve both ethnicity and culture, or the interaction of ethnic identity with cultural practices, beliefs, and institutions. It refers to how a group's shared ancestry and distinct cultural traits—such as language, religion, cuisine, dress, and family norms—shape social life, community organization, and individual identity. Ethnocultural is not a fixed or inherently hierarchical category; it describes the intersection of ethnicity and culture, which can be fluid and context-dependent. It is distinct from ethnocentrism, which centers one culture as superior. Ethnocultural identities may overlap with other identities, including nationality, religion, class, and gender, and can evolve with migration, globalization, and contact with other cultures.
