Kivilöityminen
Kivilöityminen, often translated as petrification or lithification, is a geological process where organic materials, such as wood or bone, are gradually replaced by minerals, turning them into stone. This transformation typically occurs when the porous structure of the organic material becomes saturated with mineral-rich groundwater. Over long periods, the minerals precipitate out of the water and fill the spaces within the organic structure, eventually replacing the original organic matter entirely.
The most common minerals involved in kivilöityminen are silica (silicon dioxide), calcite (calcium carbonate), and pyrite
Kivilöityminen is a slow process that requires specific environmental conditions, often found in sedimentary rock formations.
