Kivettymästä, derived from the Finnish word meaning "petrification," refers to the geological process by which organic material, such as wood, is gradually replaced by minerals. This transformation typically occurs over long periods when organic matter is buried under sediment, such as mud, sand, or volcanic ash. The mineral-rich groundwater seeps through the porous organic material, dissolving the original cellular structure and depositing mineral crystals in its place.

Common minerals involved in petrification include silica, calcite, and pyrite. Silica, in the form of chalcedony or opal, is particularly prevalent in the formation of petrified wood. As the minerals precipitate, they replicate the original form and texture of the organic material, often preserving intricate details like cell walls, growth rings, and even leaf venation.

The process requires specific conditions, including a lack of oxygen to prevent decay and the presence of mineral-bearing water. While petrification can affect various organic materials, it is most famously observed in trees, resulting in beautifully preserved specimens that resemble stone. These fossilized remnants provide invaluable insights into past ecosystems, plant life, and geological conditions.
