Kiududel

Kiududel is a traditional textile technique and the name of the fabrics produced by the Kiud people in the Nalara archipelago. The craft and its woven pieces are known for geometric motifs and a durable structure. Etymology traces to the Kiud language, with kiud meaning thread and del meaning fabric.

Construction and motifs: Kiududel fabrics are woven on simple looms, typically backstrap or floor looms, using a supplementary-weft method to create patterns in a single piece. Common motifs include stepped diamonds, waves, and stylized flora. Natural dyes such as indigo, madder, and plant-based yellows yield a restrained palette.

History: The practice is first documented in Nalara manuscript collections dating to the 12th century, with earlier oral traditions likely predating written records. It served ceremonial robes and community textiles; the style spread through regional trade networks and influenced neighboring traditions. In the colonial era it faced disruption but remained central to cultural identity. A revival movement began in the late 20th century, emphasizing traditional techniques and sustainable dyeing.
