Kiteererrosten is a term used to describe the phenomenon of rust forming on kite lines, particularly those made of metal. This is a common issue for kite enthusiasts who fly kites with metallic components, such as control bars or even some types of lines. The oxidation process, commonly known as rust, occurs when iron or steel is exposed to moisture and oxygen.

Several factors can contribute to kiteererrosten. High humidity, exposure to saltwater spray (especially near coastal areas), and leaving kite equipment outdoors for extended periods without proper care can accelerate the rusting process. While most modern kite lines are made from durable synthetic materials like polyester or Dyneema, which are resistant to corrosion, some specialized or older kite designs might still incorporate metal elements that are susceptible.

The presence of rust on kite lines can have several negative consequences. It can weaken the line, making it more prone to breaking during flight, which could lead to lost kites or dangerous situations. Rust can also transfer to the kite material, causing staining and potential damage. Furthermore, rusted metal components can become stiff and difficult to operate, affecting the kite's performance and controllability.

Preventing kiteererrosten primarily involves proper maintenance and storage. After flying a kite, especially in damp or salty conditions, it is advisable to rinse the equipment with fresh water and dry it thoroughly. Storing kites in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture can also help prevent rust formation. For kites with metal parts, occasional application of a light protective coating, like a silicone spray, might be beneficial.
