Kissaparvoviruses

Kissaparvoviruses are a genus of viruses within the family Parvoviridae. These viruses are known to infect certain species of cats, particularly domestic cats. The name "Kissaparvovirus" is derived from its association with felines. The genetic material of these viruses is single-stranded DNA. Like other parvoviruses, kissaparvoviruses replicate in the nucleus of infected host cells.

While related to canine parvovirus, which causes severe disease in dogs, kissaparvoviruses generally cause milder or subclinical infections in cats. However, in some cases, they can contribute to respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms. Transmission is typically through direct contact with infected animals, their feces, or contaminated environments. Diagnosis is usually made through molecular methods like PCR. There are no specific antiviral treatments for kissaparvovirus infections, and supportive care is generally recommended for affected animals. Vaccination against common feline pathogens, including those that can be exacerbated by parvovirus infection, is an important preventative measure. Further research is ongoing to fully understand the pathogenesis and impact of kissaparvoviruses in feline populations.
