Kissaeläimet

Kissaeläimet, scientifically known as Felidae, constitute a family of carnivorous mammals. This family includes a diverse range of species, from the majestic lion and tiger to the familiar domestic cat. Key characteristics of felids often include retractable claws, except for the cheetah, keen eyesight adapted for low light, and specialized teeth for tearing flesh. They are primarily solitary hunters, though lions are notable for their social prides.

The family Felidae is divided into two subfamilies: Pantherinae and Felinae. Pantherinae typically includes the larger cats such as lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and snow leopards, often distinguished by their ability to roar. Felinae encompasses the smaller cats, including cougars, cheetahs, lynxes, bobcats, and domestic cats, which purr.

Felids are found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia, though their original range in Australia was due to human introduction. Their diet consists almost entirely of meat, and they are apex predators in many ecosystems. Conservation status varies greatly among species, with many facing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The study of felids, or felinology, focuses on their biology, behavior, and conservation.
