Kirjapilti

Kirjapilti is a Finnish term used in bibliology and conservation to describe a blot or stain caused by ink on a page. It typically arises from an accidental spill, dripping from a pen, excessive ink in early printing, or moisture-driven ink migration. The mark can vary from a small dark speck to a large, irregular area that obscures text or imagery.

Causes and characteristics. Ink stains may form when writing implements leak, when ink is applied too heavily, or when damp conditions cause ink to spread across the page or between pages. In historical manuscripts, such stains can reveal information about the writing materials and the production process, including the type of ink used and the handling conditions during use and storage. The appearance and spread of a kirja­pilti may also affect legibility, preservation decisions, and cataloging notes.

Conservation and handling. In libraries and archives, conservators document kirjapilti with high-resolution photography and, if appropriate, imaging techniques such as multispectral imaging to capture information that remains visible beneath or around the stain. Stabilization aims to prevent further spreading and to minimize risk to adjacent text, rather than removing the stain, which can cause additional damage. Digital reproduction is often employed to preserve legibility without compromising the original.

Context and usage. Kirjapilti is primarily a descriptive term found in Finnish conservation practice and scholarly work on manuscripts and early printed books.
