Kiristyssiteitä, often translated as tourniquets, are medical devices used to stop severe, life-threatening bleeding in limbs. They are applied by constricting blood flow to an extremity, effectively occluding both arterial and venous circulation. This drastic measure is reserved for situations where direct pressure and other hemostatic techniques have failed to control hemorrhage and immediate amputation is not an option.

The historical use of tourniquets dates back centuries, with various forms documented throughout military history. Modern tourniquets are designed for ease of application, even by untrained individuals, and are often a standard component of first-aid kits, particularly in combat zones and high-risk environments. They typically consist of a strap that is tightened around the limb using a windlass mechanism.

Proper application is crucial. A tourniquet should be placed proximal to the wound, meaning closer to the torso than the injury. Once applied, it should be tightened until bleeding stops completely. It is essential to note the time of application, as prolonged use can lead to tissue damage and nerve injury due to lack of blood flow. The tourniquet should only be removed by qualified medical professionals. While highly effective in life-saving situations, tourniquets carry inherent risks and their use should be a last resort when other bleeding control methods are insufficient.
