Kipinäpistokkeet, also known as spark plugs, are essential components in internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to ignite the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber. This ignition is achieved by creating an electrical spark that jumps across a small gap between two electrodes at the tip of the plug. This spark initiates the combustion process, driving the piston down and generating power.

The design of a spark plug involves a central electrode and a ground electrode, separated by an insulator, typically made of ceramic. The high voltage from the ignition system is applied to the central electrode, and when it reaches a sufficient level, it overcomes the resistance of the air-fuel mixture and jumps to the ground electrode, creating the spark. The timing and intensity of this spark are critical for efficient engine operation and emissions control.

Over time, spark plugs can wear out or become fouled with carbon deposits, oil, or fuel. This can lead to misfires, reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and higher emissions. Therefore, regular inspection and replacement of spark plugs are part of routine engine maintenance. Different types of spark plugs exist, utilizing various materials for the electrodes (such as copper, platinum, or iridium) to enhance durability and performance.
