Kinokilium

Kinokilium is a term occasionally used to refer to kinocilium, a specialized primary cilium found on certain sensory hair cells in the vertebrate inner ear and, in many species, the lateral line system. In modern scientific literature, kinocilium is the standard spelling; Kinokilium appears as a less common variant or transliteration in older or non-English sources.

Kinocilia are single, relatively long ciliary projections that extend from the apical surface of hair cells. They are built around a microtubule-based axoneme, typically arranged in a 9+2 pattern, and are anchored to the cell by a basal body. In mammals, kinocilia are present in developing cochlear hair cells but largely regress during maturation, whereas kinocilia are retained in vestibular hair cells throughout life.

The functional role of the kinocilium is to provide a polarity reference for the mechanotransduction apparatus of hair cells. Deflection of the hair bundle toward the kinocilium increases the opening of mechanically gated channels, leading to depolarization and altered neurotransmitter release. The relative position of the kinocilium to the stereociliary bundle establishes the directionality of the hair cell’s response to mechanical stimuli.

Distribution among vertebrates varies: kinocilia are found in the sensory epithelia of the inner ear across many species, and in aquatic vertebrates they are also present in lateral line hair cells. In humans, vestigial or developmental kinociliary structures may be observed, reflecting evolutionary changes in sensory cell organization.
