Kinetids
Kinetids are the basic functional units of the ciliature in ciliates (phylum Ciliophora). In these organisms, a kinetid refers to the basal apparatus that produces and anchors a cilium or pair of cilia. A kinetid typically includes a basal body (kinetosome) and associated structures such as rootlets and connecting fibers. Depending on the species, a kinetid may bear one cilium (monokinetid) or two cilia (dikinetid), and these units are arranged in rows called kineties that run along the cell cortex.
The organization of kinetids underlies the characteristic pattern of ciliary beating and locomotion. The basal bodies
Kinetids form a key aspect of ciliate cell development and division. During cell renewal, basal bodies duplicate
