KineticPerimetrie

KineticPerimetrie, or kinetic perimetry, is a clinical method used in ophthalmology to assess the full visual field by presenting moving light stimuli. It complements static perimetry by mapping the extent and sensitivity of peripheral vision and is useful for detecting and characterizing scotomas and peripheral field losses.

During kineticPerimetrie, stimuli of varying size and brightness are moved from non-seeing into the seeing portion of the visual field. The patient signals when a moving stimulus is first perceived, and the locus of detection defines an isopter, a line of equal visual sensitivity. The procedure can be performed with traditional devices such as the Goldmann perimeter or with modern automated kinetic perimeters. Stimulus sizes are often labeled I to V, with adjustable brightness and controlled motion speed and direction to optimize detection.

The results produce a map of the visual field highlighting isopters that delineate tested regions. Kinetic perimetry is particularly advantageous for assessing peripheral vision, evaluating patients who have difficulty with fixation, or when a patient cannot complete static testing. Its limitations include reliance on examiner technique, variability between sessions, and the need for patient cooperation. In practice, kineticPerimetrie is usually used in conjunction with static perimetry to obtain a comprehensive picture of visual function.

Historically, kinetic perimetry emerged in the mid-20th century with contributions from Goldmann and others, and it remains part of clinical practice in some centers through both manual and computerized systems. It provides complementary information about the dynamics of the visual field that static testing alone may not fully capture.
