Kilohertsialueen

Kilohertsialueen refers to a range of radio frequencies measured in kilohertz (kHz). This portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is typically used for long-range radio communication, including maritime and aeronautical navigation, as well as standard AM (amplitude modulation) broadcasting. Frequencies in the kilohertz range have longer wavelengths, which allows them to travel over the horizon by diffracting around the curvature of the Earth. This characteristic makes them suitable for applications where a wide coverage area is desired.

The kilohertz band is generally divided into several sub-bands. The lowest part of this spectrum is often used for very low frequency (VLF) and low frequency (LF) transmissions, which can penetrate water and the ground to some extent. These are utilized for specialized communication systems, such as submarine communication. Higher within the kilohertz range are the medium frequency (MF) bands, which include the AM radio broadcasting frequencies. These signals are reflected by the ionosphere, enabling them to travel vast distances, especially at night when the ionosphere is more reflective.

Due to the relatively narrow bandwidth available in the kilohertz range, data transmission rates are limited compared to higher frequency bands. However, their ability to propagate over long distances with relatively simple and inexpensive equipment makes them valuable for specific communication needs. Interference can be a factor, particularly in the MF band, with signals from distant stations sometimes overlapping.
