Kilapua

Kilapua is a fictional archipelago used in speculative geography and world-building. It comprises four inhabited islands—Kilapu, Lirona, Nimao, and Vesa—and a scattering of islets, situated in the tropical Otari Ocean near the fictional continent of Isara. The name Kilapua is drawn from the Kilapuan language and is said to mean "winds from three seas," reflecting the region's maritime orientation.

Geography and environment: The islands are of volcanic origin; elevations range from sea cliffs to central volcanic cones reaching about 700 meters. The archipelago is ringed by fringing coral reefs; inland zones feature lowland rainforests, mangroves, and agricultural terraces. The climate is tropical maritime with a pronounced wet season and relatively stable year-round temperatures.

History and governance: Kilapua was settled by Kilapuan-speaking sailors circa 9th to 11th centuries, with later contact from distant traders. In the 19th and 20th centuries Kilapua came under the influence of neighboring powers, and in 1992 it established a constitutional framework with a unicameral legislature and an executive headed by a prime minister.

Demographics and economy: Population about 420,000; Kilapuan and Adari are official languages and widely spoken; economy relies on sustainable fisheries, cocoa and spice cultivation, and eco-tourism; the government promotes conservation of reefs and forests; infrastructure centers on ports on Kilapu and Nimao.

Culture: Traditional music, mask dances, and crafts; annual Wind Festival celebrates seafaring heritage; cuisine features coconut, taro, and fresh seafood.
