Kihistruktuuri

Kihistruktuuri, literally a layered structure, is a term used to describe the arrangement of matter into distinct layers or beds within a system. It is applied across disciplines such as geology, soil science, archaeology, and materials science to characterize how materials are organized vertically and how this organization reflects formation processes and history.

In geology and stratigraphy, kihistruktuuri refers to stratified rock formations and the sequence of layers that form through deposition, sedimentation, or chemical and biological processes. Each layer can differ in grain size, mineral composition, color, and fossil content, providing markers of past environments. Principles such as original horizontality and superposition help interpret the relative ages of layers, while cross-cutting features, tilts, folds, and faults reveal subsequent geological events that disturbed the original layering.

In soils, kihistruktuuri manifests as soil horizons and laminated deposits, representing successive stages of weathering, organic accumulation, and mineral input.
