Kidul

Geographically, the term is evident in Gunung Kidul Regency, part of the Yogyakarta Special Region in Indonesia. The name translates roughly as “Southern Mountain,” reflecting its position on the southern slopes of the Yogyakarta plateau. The regency is known for karst landscapes, caves, and a long coastline along the Indian Ocean, with tourism and natural-resource management shaping its economy.

Cultural significance is anchored by Nyi Roro Kidul, a legendary figure in Javanese and Sundanese folklore described as the Queen of the Southern Sea who governs the southern coast of Java. The myth has influenced local customs and storytelling, including cautions in some traditions about colors (notably green) and conduct around the sea, though these beliefs are folkloric rather than historical facts.
