Khashoggi

Jamal Khashoggi was a Saudi Arabian journalist, columnist, and editor. He was born in Medina, Saudi Arabia, in 1958. Khashoggi began his journalism career in the 1980s, working for various Saudi publications. He rose to prominence as a confidant of Saudi royal family members and served as editor-in-chief of the Saudi newspaper Al-Madinah and later as general manager of the pan-Arab newspaper Al-Watan.

In his later years, Khashoggi became an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, particularly under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He expressed concerns about the direction of the country, human rights issues, and the crackdown on dissent. He lived in self-imposed exile in the United States starting in 2017, where he wrote a column for The Washington Post.

On October 2, 2018, Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, to obtain documents related to his planned marriage. He never emerged. Investigations by Turkish authorities and international bodies concluded that he was murdered inside the consulate by a team of Saudi operatives. The Saudi government initially denied involvement but later acknowledged that Khashoggi had been killed inside the consulate, attributing it to a rogue operation. The incident drew widespread international condemnation and raised significant questions about Saudi Arabia's human rights record and the actions of its government.
