Kezek

Kezek is the Hungarian plural noun for hands. In Hungarian, kéz means hand, and kez is its plural form. The term is used in everyday language as well as in medical and scientific contexts to refer to the pair of hands.

Anatomy: The hand comprises the wrist (carpus), the palm (metacarpus), and the fingers (digits). In the adult there are 27 bones: eight carpal bones, five metacarpals, and fourteen phalanges (the thumb has two). The joints include the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, and interphalangeal joints. The intrinsic hand muscles lie within the palm; extrinsics originate in the forearm and control many movements. Major nerves are the median, ulnar, and radial nerves, supplying motor control and sensation. Blood is delivered by the radial and ulnar arteries, forming the palmar arches. The skin on the fingertips is highly innervated, with dense sensory receptors enabling fine touch and texture discrimination.

Function: The hand enables grasping, manipulation, and exploration. It supports two main grip types: a power grip and a precision grip, the latter relying on the opposable thumb. The fingertips provide high tactile acuity due to dense mechanoreceptors and fingerprint skin patterns, which aid texture discrimination and grip control.

Evolution and culture: The opposable thumb in humans and other primates enables complex tool use and dexterity. Hands underpin communication in sign languages, as well as writing, music, and crafts.

Clinical aspects: Hands are prone to injuries and disorders such as fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinopathies, and Dupuytren’s contracture. Occupational and repetitive strain injuries are common. Treatment ranges from splinting and therapy to medication or surgery.
