Ketu

Ketu is the descending lunar node in Hindu astrology, commonly described as a shadow planet. It is not a physical body but a mathematical point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic during its southward path relative to the Sun.

In Hindu mythology, Ketu and Rahu are formed from the severed body and head of the demon Svarbhanu after he drinks the ambrosia and is beheaded by Vishnu. Rahu is mythically the head and Ketu the body, and together they are said to cause eclipses as they pursue the Sun and Moon.

Astrologically, Ketu represents karmic memory, spiritual evolution, and detachment from material life. It points to areas where a person may have past-life connections or lessons to learn and is often associated with non-material pursuits such as philosophy, mysticism, or religious devotion. Ketu’s effects are nuanced: it can cultivate liberation and insight, but in other contexts may bring detachment, confusion, or a sense of incompleteness, depending on its sign, house placement, and aspects, as well as the presence of its counterpart Rahu.

In a birth chart, the sign and house occupied by Ketu indicate where one might experience shifts, disinterest in worldly rewards, or a strong pull toward spirituality. Its aspects and transits can modify these results, producing periods of renunciation, reassessment, or awakening.
