Keskusatomia is a Finnish term that translates to "central atom" in English. In chemistry, it refers to the atom that is bonded to the largest number of other atoms within a molecule or ion. This central atom is typically the least electronegative atom and is often located in the center of the molecular structure. Understanding the central atom is crucial for predicting the molecule's geometry, polarity, and reactivity.

The identity of the central atom is usually determined by its position in the periodic table and its bonding capacity. For instance, in water (H2O), oxygen is the central atom as it is bonded to two hydrogen atoms.
